Producers Freshold and Renzo have both been making music since the rave days of the 90s and have since come together under the name Insomniax, a name that has become synonymous with quality drum & bass music. The duo from the UK have been an integral part of the Viper family since signing in 2014, with a history of strong releases, like ‘Goldsmith Road’, ‘Crying Rain’, and ‘Uridium’, which hit the top of the charts on Beatport last year.

Continuing to move from strength to strength, the latest release from Insomniax is a solo production by Freshold, the aptly named ‘Foghorn’. Text-to-speech AI voices set the scene from the beginning amidst a mysterious, misty introduction, footsteps plodding in the background adding to the eerie atmosphere. The dialogue between the two characters adds a menacing undertone, but the subtleties in the sound design are what really set this track apart.

Faint carnival sounds add to the building scenery, while the track’s title foghorns ring in the distance. The combination of such organic sounds coming together serve to create a natural, cinematic opening that truly tells a story. A creative approach to drum & bass, the track is incredibly refreshing and sparks the imagination.

However, the track isn’t all just about story-telling – Insomniax deliver a healthy dose of bass with the drop; the kind of minimal, spacious, rising bassline that is set to take the scene by storm. The bass is truly the star of the track, given ample room to breathe amidst the rest of the production and deservedly stealing the spotlight.

Crisp, clean, and totally creative, ‘Foghorn’ is sure to be a quick favourite for DJs and ravers alike.
